What is a METAR?
A METAR (Meteorological Aerodrome Report) is a standardized weather observation issued by airports worldwide, typically every hour. It encodes current conditions like wind speed and direction, visibility, cloud cover, temperature, dewpoint, and barometric pressure into a compact text format. Minimums decodes these reports so you can read them at a glance instead of parsing raw text.
How do I set my personal minimums?
Head to Settings > Personal Minimums to configure your thresholds for ceiling, visibility, wind, and crosswind. If it's your first time, you can also use Guided Setup from the home screen. It walks you through each parameter step by step and recommends sensible starting values based on your certificate level.
Where does the weather data come from?
All weather data is sourced from aviationweather.gov, a public API operated by the National Weather Service and the FAA. Minimums fetches observations directly from this service so you always get official, unmodified reports.
Why is a METAR missing or outdated?
Not all stations report continuously. Some airports only issue METARs during operating hours, and automated stations can occasionally go offline. Check the freshness timer on each observation. If it's more than 60-90 minutes old, the station may have stopped reporting. Try pulling to refresh, or check a nearby airport.
Does the app work outside the US?
Minimums currently supports airports within the contiguous United States (CONUS). We're exploring international coverage for a future update, but for now the app is optimized for US stations and data sources.
Is my data private?
Yes. Everything (your personal minimums, saved airports, and preferences) is stored locally on your device. The app does not collect analytics, does not use trackers, and does not share data with third parties. Read our full Privacy Policy for details.
How much does it cost?
Minimums has no in-app purchases, no subscriptions, and no ads. We built it because we wanted a better way to check weather before a flight.
